Raheem Sterling joined London rivals Arsenal on loan from Chelsea before the transfer window closed and came on as a 73rd-minute substitute for Bukayo Saka in a goalless draw at Atalanta, making Sterling the first English player to play for four different English clubs in the Champions League.
During his 12-year playing career, Sterling, 29, has played in the Champions League with Liverpool, Manchester City and Chelsea before achieving this record with Arsenal. In addition to Sterling, former England star David Beckham has also played in the competition with four other clubs, including foreign clubs Manchester United, Real Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain and AC Milan.
David Batty, meanwhile, played in the competition for three English clubs – Blackburn, Leeds and Newcastle – before Sterling broke his record.
